Mr. James Marion Cheek, age 94, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Gateway Gardens Assisted Living. Mr. Cheek was a long-time member of Gospel Light Baptist Church.
Mr. Cheek was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen Bradley Cheek; son, Harold Cheek; step-children Vickie Murray, Bobby Lewis, and Steve Lewis.
Mr. Cheek is survived by his son Eddie Cheek of Bethlehem, Daughter Diane Toland of Tampa; Brother Billy Cheek of Lawrenceville, 10 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mr. Cheek was born into the Depression Era, which instilled in him values of a simple life with family at the core. He served the United States proudly by enlisting in the Navy not once, but twice. He changed his birth year in a family bible to enlist before the age of 18, but was soon found out, so he rejoined again at the legal age.
If asked, James would tell you he was a used-car salesman by trade. He was an avid NASCAR fan and dedicated family man. He loved his Pepsi-Cola, overalls, and swapping stories with anyone who would sit and talk. In his 94 years of life, he was most proud to be “Papaw.” Not often was he called by name. Everyone who knew him loved him and affectionately called him Papaw, too.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 30, 2026, in the Chapel of Maddox Memorial Home, with Rev. Wallace Mack and Mr. Cody Murray officiating. Burial will follow the service at Barrow Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan 29, 2026, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Maddox Memorial Home.
Flowers are accepted for the Funeral Service.
