Mrs. Merita Casper Austin, age 93, of Winder, the beloved matriarch of the Austin family and cherished member of the community, peacefully passed away at her residence on Friday, July 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Austin dedicated 33 and a half years of her professional life as a ward secretary at Winder-Barrow Hospital, where her compassion and attention to detail made a lasting impact on those she served. She was known for her unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Her home was a sanctuary for her loved ones, a place where warmth and laughter thrived. Merita was the oldest member of Carter Hill Christian Church, where she was a devoted member.
Merita had a passion for gardening, visiting the mountains, and fishing. Additionally, she was an avid supporter of the Atlanta Braves, taking pleasure in watching their games and celebrating the highs of the season.
Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her husband, James Willie Austin, and her daughter, Linda Gail Austin Phillips. She also joins her dearly departed parents, Silmon Casper and Viola Fulcher Casper, along with her brothers Andrew, Thomas, and Ray Casper, and sisters Louise Mealear, Montine Hunter, and Jean Scogins.
A proud family woman, Mrs. Austin leaves behind her daughters, Kay (Mike) Everette of Bethlehem, Nancy Jan Toole of Baldwin, son, James Ronald (Mary) Austin of Oakwood, and her daughter, Pamela Ann (Marlon) Hardy of Jefferson. She is also survived by her adored grandchildren, including Todd Everette, Teri Everette, Chris Toole, Susan Hardegree, Jamie Brown, Trey Phillips, Brandi Cotton, and Marla Hardy, along with seventeen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at Carter Hill Christian Church with Pastor Heath Kennedy and Rev. Ben Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Carter Hill Christian Church Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Maddox-Carter Memorial Home.
