Obituary

Pastor Scott Sims, age 59, of Hoschton, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

He was born on May 12, 1967, to Doyle and Shirley Sims.

Scott is survived by his wife of 36 years, Stephanie Stovall Sims; his daughters, Kaci (Will) Mundhenke and Mary Kate Sims; his granddaughter, Laurel Kate Mundhenke; his parents, Doyle and Shirley Sims; his sister, Kim (Tom) Davis; a host of dear family members, nieces, and nephews; his dedicated church family; and many dear friends who will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his faithful and loyal canine companion, Penny.

Scott was a loving and devoted son, husband, brother, and uncle, and a proud “daddy” to his daughters. He married Stephanie, the love of his life, on August 31, 1990, and they shared 36 years of marriage. Of all the titles he held, “Granddaddy” was his favorite. He adored his granddaughter, Laurel Kate, and thought the world of her.

To his family, Scott was a superhero. He was the one everyone turned to and called, no matter the occasion. He was truly the hands and feet of Jesus, living out his faith every day. Devoted to the calling the Lord placed on his life, he was a faithful servant not only to his family, but to his church and his community, where he was involved in many ways. Loved by everyone he met, Scott was a true gift to his family and to all who were blessed to be around him.

Scott answered the call to ministry early in life and spent his career faithfully serving the church. He began as youth pastor at Sharon Baptist Church from 1992 to 1995, then served as youth pastor and associate pastor at Ivy Creek Baptist Church from 1995 to 2011. He went on to serve as senior pastor of Woods Grove Baptist Church from 2011 to 2022, and at the time of his passing was senior pastor of Mountain View Baptist Church, where he had served since 2023. Through more than three decades of ministry, he loved his congregations and walked alongside families through life’s joys and hardships.

A carpenter by trade, Scott was the owner and operator of Trim-Co Exteriors in Winder, which he started alongside his dad, Doyle, in 1985. His special nephew, Jason Day, and uncle, Wayne Sims, worked diligently alongside him. He was a loyal bi-vocational pastor, faithfully balancing his work and his calling. He was a doer of all things and a jack of all trades, and he was always the family’s personal handyman, ready to fix whatever needed fixing. He always liked to work on a project and built many additions onto the family’s home in Hoschton. If he made you a project, you could guarantee that it had a Bible verse and his signature on the bottom. He didn’t like to sit still, but he also valued and loved a Sunday afternoon nap in his recliner. He had a deep love of music and a fantastic sense of humor that could light up any room. When he wasn’t working on a project, you could probably find him cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs or adding to his collection of knives.

His family is comforted by the promise of heaven and by knowing that he is present with the Lord. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:8) The family knows that Scott would want to use this time to point others to Christ.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 30th, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Mountain View Baptist Church, Gainesville, with Bobby Brown officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, October 29th, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Maddox Memorial Home, Winder.
