Mrs. Sara Willene Strickland, age 88, of Winder, Georgia died February 16, 2012. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend to many and will be greatly missed by all. Mrs. Strickland was born in Bethlehem, Georgia on November 9, 1923 at the William Harris Homestead (circa 1825) which is a Walton County Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Her ashes will be interred at the Harris Family Cemetery February 19, 2011, completing her life's journey where it began. Mrs. Strickland was a daughter of the late John William and Ludie Smith Harris. She was preceded by her husband of 48 years, Jefferson Stewart "Jake" Strickland, Jr. Mrs. Strickland was especially proud of the fact that she worked at the Lockheed Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta during World War II, installing bomb sights on B 29 aircraft. She was an active member of the Barrow County Senior Center. A resident of Winder since 1996, she attended the Winder First Baptist Church and was a member of the Fidealis Sunday School Class and was a graduate of Winder High School.
Left to cherish her memory are Children, Mike (Martha) Strickland of Franklin, Tennessee, Jefferson Stewart Strickland, III of Los Angles, California, Diane (Tim) Knight of McDonough, Georgia, Ray (Pam) Strickland of Sugar Hill, Georgia, Grandchildren, Sara Grace Vaughn, Leanna Strickland, Jefferson D. Knight, Jenna Knight Farmer, Jackson Strickland and Luke Strickland, Great Grandson, Jacob Thomas Vaughn, Several Nieces & Nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 2:00 P. M. from the Chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Dr. John Talley officiating. The Family will receive friends Sunday from 1-2 P. M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Barrow County Senior Center, 80 Lee Street, Winder, Georgia 30680.
